A whole-home spring clean sounds daunting until you stop treating it as a single, back-breaking day and start treating it as a plan. Spread over a week or two, room by room, it becomes a series of manageable jobs rather than one overwhelming marathon.
The goal of spring cleaning is to reach everything a regular tidy skips — the build-up behind furniture, inside cupboards and up on the surfaces you never quite get to. Here is a simple, room-by-room approach you can work through at your own pace.
Plan it over a week
Rather than blocking out an entire weekend, assign one room or zone to each day: the kitchen one evening, the bathroom the next, then bedrooms and living areas across the following days. An hour or two at a time is far more sustainable than an eight-hour push that leaves you exhausted and only half finished.
Gather your supplies before you start so you are not breaking off mid-task: cloths, a good all-purpose cleaner, baking soda and vinegar, bin bags for clutter, and a vacuum with its attachments. A little preparation keeps the momentum going and makes each session feel satisfying rather than fragmented.
Declutter first, then work top to bottom
Always declutter before you clean — there is no sense dusting around objects you are about to give away. Go through each room with a bag for rubbish and a box for donations, clearing surfaces and thinning out what has accumulated. Cleaning empty surfaces is faster, and the room instantly feels lighter.
Then clean from the top down. Start high with light fittings, shelves and the tops of cupboards, and work towards the floor, so any dust you disturb falls onto surfaces you have not cleaned yet and is caught on the way down. Vacuuming and mopping the floor last means you finish each room properly rather than re-dirtying it.
The kitchen
The kitchen rewards a proper spring clean more than anywhere. Empty and wipe out the cupboards and drawers, checking use-by dates as you go, and clean inside the appliances — the oven, the microwave and the often-forgotten fridge, where a baking-soda solution lifts grime and neutralises odours. Descale the kettle and pull out any appliances you can to clean behind them.
Do not overlook the extractor filter, the splashback and the bin itself, all of which quietly gather grease over the months. Finish with the worktops, sink and taps, where a little vinegar makes everything gleam, and the room will feel genuinely renewed.
The bathroom
Bathrooms collect limescale and soap scum that a quick weekly clean never fully removes, so spring is the time to tackle them properly. Let a vinegar solution sit on taps, showerheads and glass to dissolve the mineral build-up, then scrub tiles and grout with a baking-soda paste to lift discolouration and freshen the joints.
Work through the cabinets too, clearing out old or expired products, and wash any bath mats and shower curtains. Disinfect the toilet thoroughly, polish the mirror and fixtures, and give the extractor fan a dust — it works far better once it is clear, helping to keep damp and mould at bay.
Bedrooms and living areas
Bedrooms benefit hugely from attention to the things that gather dust unseen. Wash or air the bedding, including the pillows and any covers, flip or rotate the mattress, and vacuum underneath the bed where dust quietly collects. Wipe wardrobes inside and out, and take the chance to sort through clothes you no longer wear.
In living areas, vacuum the sofa including under the cushions, wipe down electronics and the screens that magnetise dust, and launder throws and cushion covers. Clean the windows inside and out to let the spring light back in, and dust the curtains or blinds, which hold far more than most people realise.
The details people miss
The finishing touches are what separate a spring clean from an ordinary one. Skirting boards, door frames, light switches, plug sockets and door handles are all easy to walk past and make a striking difference once done. Add radiators, the tops of doors, picture frames and the light fittings you rarely look at directly.
If tackling all of this yourself feels like a lot, that is exactly where we come in. Our deep clean is built for precisely this kind of top-to-bottom reset, reaching every corner and every overlooked detail, so you can enjoy the fresh-start feeling of spring without spending your weekends earning it.
